Learning Language

At KOG we learn Italian and Chinese languages mostly in the kinder room. However, we are progressively starting to spread languages education and cultural awareness amongst other rooms in more informal ways through songs, art & craft and whole centre Festival days. The Italian language educator runs a group time session once a week due to availability, whilst the Chinese language educator runs sessions throughout the week.

During our language group time we run a structured and formal session that includes: conversations using simple phrases and words. This allows the children to integrate those expressions and vocabulary over time and use them spontaneously in conversations; songs about a given topic that allows children to use total physical response and associate actions, movement, sound and words in a playful way;
Research about Cultural festivals, the country landmarks, typical food, as well as recreating some of those images using big building blocks, Lego blocks, play-dough and other art &craft.

The language educators also are committed to collaborating with the other teams, such as the green team, the Master Chef team, the inclusion support team, the health and safety time. Our strong collaboration is especially shown during festival days and other immersive whole centre events that involve children, families and educators.

Another practice that the language educators are committed to is updating a google doc file including links to language songs and other relevant resources that other teachers amongst other rooms can use freely.
